The Nottawasaga OPP and Murphy’s Farm partner to bring Christmas joy and presents to local youth

Christmas is coming to town for nearly 30 elementary students from across New Tecumseth, Essa Township and Adjala-Tosorontio communities, thanks to the annual “Shop With A Cop” event on Saturday, December 11, 2021. Through a partnership between the Nottawasaga OPP and Murphy’s Farm Market & Bakery, which raised a record $3,600 in support for this year’s event, students will be paired up with OPP officers to shop for Christmas presents for themselves and their entire family.

“Shop With A Cop is truly my favourite event. Coming together for this wonderful community event allows for a positive interaction with youth in our community,” shared Constable Cindy Jacome of the Nottawasaga OPP. “Bridging the gap and letting youth get to know local officers hopefully increases their comfort level and trust during a crisis. Conversations and smiles shared are priceless.”

Now in its fifth consecutive year, “Shop With A Cop” is a community policing initiative designed to provide students in need with a Christmas experience to remember and promote a healthy relationship between young children and officers. The Nottawasaga OPP works with 19 local schools to identify students with exceptional needs or hardship and invites them to participate in this fun day of holiday shopping, gift wrapping and Christmas cheer.

The goal of the event is to provide each student with $100 to complete their holiday shopping during the event, in addition to wrapping paper and supplies and other holiday gifts donated by local partners. For the first time, this year’s “Shop With A Cop” event will be hosted at the Canadian Tire in Alliston thanks to the support of General Manager Adriano Dalle Rive and his team.

“The holidays are a special time for the Murphys, one filled with magical memories, delicious food and quality moments spent together. We are so grateful to be able to create those same special moments for children and families in need here in our own community through the Shop With A Cop event,” shared Hollis English, co-owner of Murphy’s Farm Market & Bakery. “It warms my heart to see people coming together to spread Christmas cheer and goodwill to those less fortunate. On behalf of all of us at Murphy’s Farm, thank you to everyone who generously supported Shop With A Cop and who will give these young children the Christmas they deserve.”

Murphy’s Farm raises funds to support “Shop With A Cop” through various initiatives over the year – and 2021 saw a mix of new and tried-and-true methods to help reach record-breaking success. In addition to point-of-sale fundraising among customers, a new hay bale sponsorship initiative was developed as part of the annual Fall Fest, while proceeds from Murphy’s outdoor Magical Christmas Market were also donated to the cause.

The “Shop With A Cop” will take place at 8am on December 11 at the Canadian Tire in Alliston (110 Young Street).
