Knead to Know with Hollis – June 22, 2021

The first thing that we Murphy’s do when planning a party or event is discuss and decide on what the menu will be. It is our first building block and truly the foundation of any get together. What we will be making, how we will display it, what dishes we will need, writing out our mile-long ingredient list and finally asking ourselves if there is enough dessert options. These are the critical questions we ask ourselves.

I cannot tell you the amount of memories I have sitting around our kitchen table as we discuss an upcoming gathering and my mom sits there with her over-sized post-it notes scribbling away all of our meal ideas.

Events big or small. Menu. Always. First. So when I got engaged the summer we opened the farm market in 2010 and we began planning a wedding, naturally we decided on the date of the wedding by deciding first on what we wanted on the menu.

The answer to that question was strawberry shortcake. I wanted fresh berries, fluffy sweet biscuits and whipped cream as far as the eye could see. And so a June wedding it was.

Once we decided on a date and desserts (the two most important things no?) we got to work with all the other details, barn reception, ceremony in the woods, tractor rides and string lights. To say it was a whirlwind running the farm market our first year AND planning a wedding would be the understatement of the century. We closed the farm market the weekend of my wedding because everyone who worked at the farm was either in the wedding party or an invited guest. How’s that for a definition of family business!

This week, my husband Jason and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. 10 years?! A whole decade. I haven’t a clue where the time has gone. But I also DO know where it went, because there are 4 little humans that fill up our home that are very obvious markers of time gone by and a farm market business that has grown immensely over those years.

June 25, 2011 remains one of my most favourite days ever. Truly. I love re-living it watching our wedding video and looking through all the photos. It was pure magic that came to be because of the time and dedication of so many family members and friends.

Strawberry shortcake also remains one of my favourite desserts and June always makes me feel nostalgic. As we head towards the end of the month this week we will find ourselves in prime strawberry season and are looking forward to welcoming you to the farm to pick-your-own (stay tuned for details!). Perhaps you have a special event coming up and you want to start with strawberries on the menu. That, as you know, is something I *fully* support.

Wishing you a wonderful week! XO
